on may 29, tsinghua university sppm successfully held a meeting on the theme of construction of learning style for doctoral students. the meeting was presided by wu yongping, chairman of the school doctoral training committee and chairman of the school degree sub-committee. the meeting was attended by more than 40 people, including peng zongchao, secretary of the school party committee, wang yahua, associate dean of the school, xie jin and zhou shaojie, deputy secretaries of the school party committee, and faculties such as lan zhiyong, wang ming, liu zhilin, gao yuning, yin cunyi, zheng zhenqing, dai yixin, zhong wei, chen jidong, chen tianhao, meng ke, zhang penglong, liang zheng, li yingbo, yan yilong, liu shenglong, zhao jing, tang xiao, yang zhusong, wu yanjun, doctoral students representatives as well as staff from the academic office. this meeting was one of a series of seminars and meetings organized by tsinghua sppm to carry out the tasks of "the year of learning style construction" of tsinghua university. the purpose of the meeting was to promote the quality of personnel training through exchanges and discussions on the evaluation of doctoral students' innovative achievements as well as teaching style and learning style.

professor wang yahua first gave a briefing on the newly revised university’s regulations on doctoral education, introduced new regulations on education objectives, academic evaluation, interdisciplinary education, courses and stages, as well as doctoral diversion and dropout. after that, he mainly introduced the work arrangement and schedule arrangement of the evaluation reform of the doctoral degree’ innovative achievements applied by the university, analyzed and learnt lessons from the international experience of doctoral students education, and put forward ideas and suggestions for the evaluation reform of the doctoral students’ innovative achievements of the school by combining with the practices of doctoral students’ education of the school.

representatives of the doctoral students gave speeches. ma an of class 2013, zhao zilong of class 2014, shu quanfeng of class 2015, li yiyao of class 2016, and huang hao of class 2017 gave speeches one after the other. they expressed their opinions on the aspects of current pre-defense mechanism, academic publishing requirements, research direction of doctoral degree thesis, and future career development needs. in particular, they put forward suggestions on the formulation of standards for the innovative results.

faculties attending the meeting held in-depth exchanges and discussions around the topics of the meeting and the problems and suggestions put forward by student representatives. associate professor liu zhilin and professor wang ming put forward opinions on improving the evaluation system of the doctoral thesis. professor lan zhiyong pointed out that the doctoral students education should start with students’ recruitment and teachers should teach students according to their aptitude. associate professor zhou shaojie proposed to promote the style of learning by adopting great teaching style and suggested to perfect the evaluation system of doctoral degree thesis. professor liang zheng, associate professor yan yilong and associate professor gao yuning suggested to perfect the school's pre-defense system and flexibly use the pre-defense results. associate professor liu shenglong pointed out that the publication of doctoral degree theses should encourage high quality rather than large quantity. associate professor li yingbo and associate professor dai yixin suggested that advisors should be given a certain degree of autonomy in evaluation in doctoral education on the premise of meeting the minimum standards of the school and guaranteeing the basic quality.

professor wu yongping said at the end of the meeting that they listened to the opinions and suggestions of doctoral representatives and faculty representatives, and discussed the ideas and methods of evaluation reform of the innovative achievements of doctoral students, which is of great value to the reform of doctoral education of the school. the school would absorb relevant opinions and suggestions, further improve relevant mechanisms in the future doctoral education work, improve the doctoral education system, and improve the quality of academic personnel training.
this activity was also a faculty workshop organized by tsinghua sppm. tsinghua sppm's "workshop on improving teachers' teaching ability" is the core work of the school’s labor union in helping to cultivate talents. it is a series of activities jointly designed and carried out by the school’ academic offices. it has won support from the school’s labor union and is widely welcomed by the school’s teachers.
