on september 17, 18 and 25, mid office co-organized guest lectures: agriculture and rural development series with china institute for rural studies. the visiting scholar, professor yu xiaohua from the university of g?ttingen, germany gave three lectures on the topics of food security in china and its policy implications, nutritional impacts of rising food prices in african countries and matching food with mouths: missing food in rural china. sppm’s professor wang yahua, associate professor zhou shaojie, and assistant professor gao yuning hosted the lectures. around 30 international students attend the lectures.
professor yu xiaohua introduced china’s food production, nutrition, food security and other popular issues during the lectures. he also compared china’s nutrition problems with african countries’. the lectures helped international students gain the knowledge of food and nutrition security from an international comparative perspective, know other hot agriculture issues in china, and get better understanding of developing countries’ agriculture and rural development. the lectures were highly spoken by the students.
xiaohua yu is professor of agricultural economics in developing and transition countries at the department of agricultural economics and rural development and the courant research centre ’poverty, equity and growth’ in the university of g?ttingen,germany. he obtained his ph.d. from the pennsylvania state university in the u.s. in 2009. his research interests cover agricultural economics, environmental economics, chinese economy, and applied econometrics. he currently serves as the associate editor for agricultural economics, the official journal of international association of agricultural economists (iaae).
